Kathy’s mother, Maggie, also shared a photo of her holding her hand over her mouth as she pats her daughter’s head. Maggie later took to Twitter to share, adding: “My daughter Kathleen Mary is a wonderful human being.”

In the past Kathy lost her brother, Gary, after what she called a “brutal struggle” with esophageal cancer in an Instagram post three years earlier.

Kathy, who has a total of five siblings, has not spoken publicly about her sister’s battle with cancer. She has kept a relatively low profile since she sparked controversy from all sides of the political spectrum for posting a photo of herself holding a fake severed head that resembled President Donald Trump.

The viral photograph, which was shot by photographer Tyler Shields, got the attention of the Secret Service, who then launched an investigation. The Emmy Award-winning comedienne took to Twitter July 28 to announce that the investigation was finally closed.

“I am no longer under federal investigation,” Kathy wrote. “The case is closed, I have been completely exonerated. Finally.”

While the investigation may be over, the damage was done. Kathy lost her New Year’s Eve gig with CNN and was heavily criticized all over social media for the graphic image. Trump also responded to the photo on Twitter.

“Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself,” the president tweeted. “My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”

Kathy issued an apology through a video she shared on social media, NPR reported.

“I sincerely apologize … I’m a comic, I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it,” she said. “I went way too far. The image is too disturbing; I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it. … I beg for your forgiveness.”

And in a recent interview Kathy said the entire ordeal did significant damage to her career.

“I don’t think I will have a career after this,” she said. “I’m going to be honest, (Trump) broke me.”
